So, what’s your Dogecoin address? DC8rb9… Got it—something difficult to remember.

How awesome would it be, instead, to have your Dogecoin sent to “me.dog”? Easy to remember and way cooler. Let’s take a look at how you’d pull this off.

Domain Name System (DNS) Recap

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the internet’s phonebook. Instead of typing in a difficult to remember IP address, such as 208.80.152.201, you can type in wikipedia.org instead. Registration of names is handled by accredited registrars, such as Go Daddy.

Enter the Ethereum Name Service (ENS)

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) provides the same functionality but uses Smart Contracts (code) in place of DNS’s registrars (human organizations).

ENS is essentially the DNS of the decentralized web. ENS’s job is to map human-readable names like ‘alice.eth’ to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses. Using ENS tools, you can map your cryptocurrency addresses to your ENS name, allowing you to use one ENS name to receive any cryptocurrency.
